From sugar canes to green plastics: how are recyclable plastics made from sugar canes?

What are green plastics? Where and how is plastic made from sugar canes? What does polyethylene and bioethanol mean? Get all your answers here and find out more about recyclable plastics.

Climate friendly packaging

Every single one of our new Chefs Club IQF products are packed in I'm green™ Polyethylene 100% sustainable bags thereby ensuring that your kitchen can become even more climate friendly. You are now able to both serve your chicken and dispose of the bag with a clear conscience.

Below you can find out more about the climate friendly packaging and the process of manufacturing recyclable plastics – and how on earth it’s even possible to make plastic from sugar canes!

Polyethylene is conventionally manufactured from fossil sourced raw materials like oil or natural gas, and they are typically present in everyday products such as food packaging, cosmetics, drink containers, and plastic bags.

Green plastics, better known as I'm green™ Polyethylene, are plastics made from a sustainable raw material, in which bioethanol is extracted from Brazilian sugar canes and then used to create polyethylene for the making of green plastics. I'm green™ Polyethylene has got the same qualities as conventional polyethylene made from fossil raw materials in terms of application, performance, and especially recyclability.

What is the difference between using ethanol and using fossil raw materials such as oil and natural gas?
The sugar canes capture CO2 from the atmosphere in their annual growth cycle. This means that the production of I'm green™ Polyethylene contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional polyethylene made from fossil raw materials like oil or natural gas.

Chefs Club’s new I'm green™ recyclable plastic bags. Where and how are green plastics produced from sugar canes?

Brazil is the world’s largest producer of sugar canes. In Brazil and the United States, bioethanol is actually added to gasoline and is legally required to make up about a fourth of the fuel compound. This is done to make the use of gasoline greener. In 2009, the global production of bioethanol reached more than 70 billion litres.

The Brazilian company, Braskem, receives sugar canes from different suppliers and then begin a dehydration process, in which bioethanol is extracted from the sugar canes. Afterwards, the I'm green™ Polyethylene is produced. This sugar cane plastic is then delivered to other companies and producers, who convert it to green plastic products.

In this manner, 100% recyclable plastic products have been created, and they bring about a far lower CO2 emission in comparison to conventional plastic products. Also, this is a much more sustainable way to produce and use plastic.

Is green Polyethylene biodegradable, and can it be used in compost?

No, it is not biodegradable, and you can’t use it in your compost, but it is 100% recyclable. Similar to conventional plastic manufacture, I'm green™ Polyethylene is a recyclable material, and it can actually be re-used through the same conventional chains due to the processes that they use today.

Since I'm green™ Polyethylene is not biodegradable, the CO2 that is captured during the growth cycle of the sugar canes remains isolated throughout the life cycle of the plastic!

What is bioplastic or biopolymer?

In concurrence with the European Bioplastics Association, plastic made from sustainable sources of biodegradable plastic are called bioplastic (or biopolymers).

But, since I'm green™ Polyethylene is made from the ethanol extracted from sugar canes, it is also considered as bioplastic.

What is I'm green™?

I'm green™ is the brand that has been established by the company, Braskem, which identifies the products in their portfolio as produced through sustainable sources. In order to identify the products that has I'm green™ Polyethylene in their composition and to help consumers recognise them, Braskem created the brand label I'm green™.
