Lake Jipe is an inter-territorial lake straddling the borders of Kenya and Tanzania. On the Kenyan side, it is located south of the village of Nghonji while on the Tanzanian side, it is situated within Mwanga District, in Kilimanjaro Region. Tsavo West National Park protects part of the lake’s northern shore, while on the Tanzania side Mkomazi Game Reserve is nearby. The lake is known for fish, water birds, mammals like hippoppotamus, wetland plants and lake-edge swamps.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arusha / Moshi / Marangu – Lake Jipe – Marangu / Moshi / Arusha

Pickup up in the morning from Arusha/Moshi/Marangu and drive Lake Jipe, stunning views of Usambara mountains as well as local and fisherman villages are seen en-route to the lake.

We will start walk from lake shore passing through tall lake reeds to a boat or canoe ride in the lake and depending on the season sometimes it’s difficult reaching the lake due to heavy reeds. You will spend a few hours on the lake looking for water birkds, hippos or crocodiles and sometimes Elephants coming from Tsavo West National Park.

Sometime you can fish Tilapia for your own lunch and can as well combine Lake Jipe with an off-the-beaten-track hike nearby waterfall in the Pare Mountains.
